HR Tip of the Month
Background and Reference Checks
Background and reference checks are essential to ensuring a good hire. Checking a candidate's background and references may give you a red light in regards to hiring that candidate. Running background checks and verifying references can protect you from negligent hiring lawsuits. Background checks let you know if candidates have criminal records, and reference checks can give you clearer ideas about candidates' previous behavior. Since the vast majority of business theft is committed by employees, you can save money by ensuring that employees do not have a history of theft. More importantly, you can prevent workplace violence and keep your employees safe by learning if candidates have a record of violent behavior. However, there are laws and regulations to follow to ensure the background and reference checking process is fair and legal.
